Advertised Job Summary
The Secretary of the University and of the Board of Trustees serves at the will of the Board of Trustees and is one of the principal officers of the University, acting as the official liaison between the Board of Trustees and the University’s administrative officers, faculty, staff, and students. The Secretary serves as the coordinator of the Board and its members for all official functions and activities of the Board or with which the Board is involved. In alignment with University policy, the Secretary is the officer of the Board with whom the authority resides for signing contracts and agreements that are binding on the University.
The Secretary maintains the operational and administrative mechanisms of the Board and the Office of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, so that the Board may focus on its fiduciary duties, its governance functions, and its strategic role to the University of South Carolina System.
The Secretary offers strategic advice to the Board’s Chair, Vice Chair, and Committee Chairs, at the request of those officers.
Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree and knowledge and understanding of higher education, based on 10 or more years as an employee of a college, university, or university system. Direct USC experience. Knowledge and understanding of flagship universities as well as university systems. Knowledge and understanding of university and/or corporate governance. A track record of researching and applying best practices in governance. A track record of guiding others in accomplishing organizational goals, building strategic partnerships, and facilitating change. The ability to communicate conflicting points of view with the objective of building mutual understanding. Ability to ensure adherence to law, policy, or other standards.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
