Variable Hours Research Assistant

The Oxford Internet Institute – founded in 2001 - is a multidisciplinary research and teaching department of the University of Oxford, dedicated to the social science of the Internet.

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Researching Identity Networks Group (RING) at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford as a part of the ESRC-funded ANSWER grant.

This is a fixed-term, variable hours role for up to 10 hours per week and a maximum of 375 hours. This position is available immediately for 10 months. It will involve a mix of both remote and on-site desk work in Oxford.

You will be responsible for recruitment of participants in two studies (one focus group based, one interview based). You will also be part of a team who conducts the interviews, focus groups, and the online survey. You will also help with the organisation and planning of a project-end workshop.

You will be expected to assist with interview coding, data management, and data analysis. Training and assistance will be provided for all data management.

The purpose of this grant is to provide academic insight and technical advances on an existing software application “Network Canvas” (https://www.networkcanvas.com). Network Canvas has recently released a version that permits interviewing in a browser thereby opening up the potential for self-reported network research. This project is about understanding the methodological and usability challenges in shifting from interviews to self-reported data. Network Canvas is primarily funded by the National Institute of Health in the US and core application development is funded up to 2029. This position is a part of the ANSWER grant funded via ESRC’s Transforming Data call as a methodological supplement to the main grant

This position is ideal for candidates looking to build their academic CV, gain experience with empirical mixed-methods work, and learn about both social network analysis and interviewing. The research from this project will be oriented towards academic publications as well as public diffusion of world-class interviewing software, Network Canvas.

In general, excellent organisational skills and experience with interviewing will be more important than computational or mathematical skills with social network analysis for this project.

This position will provide opportunities to learn how to conduct and code interviews, to engage in academic writing, and to meet key stakeholders in social network analysis at our workshop.

Only applications received before noon on Monday 19th August can be considered.
