Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel is responsible for the delivery, coordination, and oversight of all legal services affecting the University, and serves as a liaison between the University and its related and affiliated entities on legal and policy issues.

The Vice Chancellor and General Counsel provides advice on matters of governance, institutional risk, compliance, contracts, employment, student affairs, research, and public records, and serves as a trusted advisor on issues with significant legal, financial, reputational, and operational implications. The position performs highly complex and sophisticated legal work and exercises broad discretion and independent judgment in advising University leadership.

The Vice Chancellor and General Counsel serves as the University's principal legal liaison with the Office of the Attorney General of North Carolina and works collaboratively with the UNC System Office and peer institutions across the University of North Carolina System.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is one of 17 institutions of The University of North Carolina System and is a Land-Grant, Doctoral Research institution committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service. The University offers degree programs at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. The University has also established a Research-Industrial Park, called the Gateway University Research Park with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to foster technology transfer and promote economic development in the region. The University enrolls over 15,000 students with approximately 2,000 faculty and staff.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible legal experience, preferably in higher education, public sector, or complex institutional environments.
  • Demonstrated experience advising senior executives or governing boards on complex legal and policy matters.
