Binghamton University seeks a dynamic researcher and administrator to serve as its next Vice President for Research. Part of the State University of New York, Binghamton University was founded in 1946 and has become one of the premier public universities in the nation. R1 classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, Binghamton had record research expenditures of $87.3 million during the 2024-2025 fiscal year and is poised for future growth. The Vice President for Research will lead Binghamton’s research efforts and inspire the discoveries that shape our world for the better.

The Vice President for Research oversees all services provided at Binghamton University by The Research Foundation for SUNY (RF), a private, non-profit educational corporation. Through this agreement with SUNY, The RF delivers essential mission-critical services to facilitate research and discovery by administering sponsored projects and delivering intellectual property and technology transfer services that fuel innovation and move ideas and inventions to the marketplace. At Binghamton University, these services are provided by the offices of: Strategic Research Initiatives, Sponsored Programs (pre-award), Grants Management/Purchasing (post-award financial), Human Resources, Research Compliance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships, Research Advancement and Government Relations. In addition, the VPR serves as the RF Operations Manager for Binghamton University. In this capacity, the VPR is authorized to act on behalf of the RF, delegate authority, commit RF resources and staff, obligate the RF to specific activities, and otherwise legally bind the RF for the benefit of the University. The Vice President for Research will participate in SUNY-wide Research Foundation meetings and advocate for the university when SUNY initiatives are undertaken and system resources are available.

The successful candidate will be an individual with a strategy and a vision for research at Binghamton University with an earned doctorate and the academic credentials required for a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of professor in an academic department of the University. Candidates should have a strong record of externally funded research and significant personal accomplishment. The University desires applicants with demonstrated skills in collaboration, communication, and the ability to work closely with internal and external partners, especially those in government and industry. Competitive candidates for this role will have experience in interdisciplinarity and supporting cross-campus projects and programs as well as developing a close and productive relationship with colleagues in offices including Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships, Government Relations, Grants Management, Research Advancement, Research Compliance, Sponsored Programs, and Strategic Research Initiatives. Demonstrated success and experience in technology transfer and commercialization, entrepreneurship, sponsored programs, competitive grant processes, procedures, and regulations are required.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have qualifications, skills, experiences, and personal qualities that may include:

  • Experience and expertise in full-circle research efforts, from proposal development to closeout
  • Experience building and supporting shared infrastructure for campus research activities
  • Track record of advancing research across diverse academic units with experience applicable to supporting the University’s six colleges through equitable resource allocation and measurable impact
  • Experience in providing strategic leadership in campus-wide interdisciplinary research and scholarship
  • Experience in creating new partnerships and building on existing relationships
  • A record of leadership and innovation in the national and international research landscape
  • The ability to enhance the educational and research missions of the University
  • Senior administrative experience
  • Knowledge of the role of philanthropic foundations in research and scholarship
  • A history of prior interactions with government agencies and industry and existing and emerging trends in research and enterprise
  • Familiarity with patenting and licensing, technology transfer and understanding of foundation and corporate relations
  • Comprehensive and thorough knowledge of federal research policies and compliance regulations
  • An understanding of federal and state appropriations processes, grants and contract administration and strategic planning
  • Experience with personnel and budgetary management in a complex environment
  • Expertise in aligning strategic resources to achieve common goals and advance strategic initiatives
  • An ability to manage competing large-scale projects simultaneously
  • An appreciation of the culture and values of higher education that encompasses the University’s colleges and schools
  • A dedication to faculty support and service, a track record of collegiality and teamwork and a belief in collaborative governance
  • Sound professional judgement and a deep commitment to personal and professional ethics

Salary for the role is currently anticipated to range from $330,000 to $390,000, commensurate with experience.
