Visiting Assistant Professor at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Brown University

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Brown University invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2026 (with the possibility of a third, terminal year based on performance, need, and availability of funds). We hope to recruit a committed scholar whose teaching addresses Latin American and/or Caribbean history, culture, society, and politics from an innovative and interdisciplinary perspective.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. We encourage applicants from a broad range of disciplines, including but not limited to history, anthropology, literature, cultural studies, sociology, political science, geography, and related fields. Regional specialization is open, though we are particularly interested in candidates whose classes engage transnational, comparative, or diasporic frameworks, as well as themes such as migration, race and ethnicity, economic and/or social disparities, environmental history, or the history of science and knowledge.

The successful applicant is expected to teach 4 courses per year and undertake related duties, including advising. They will contribute to the core courses in our Latin American and Caribbean Studies concentration (LACA) and will have the opportunity to develop courses in their own area of specialization as well. Responsibilities will include advising undergraduate students, organizing events and pre-professional activities for our graduate student community, and participating in the Center’s myriad programmatic activities.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field in-hand, or must have completed all degree requirements by the start date of the appointment. Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or relevant regional languages is expected, depending on area of specialization.

For this position, Brown offers only the J-1 visa classification to scholars who need immigration sponsorship in order to enter the U.S. and commence lawful employment under the terms of their appointment.
