The Department of Sociology in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a 9-month Visiting Assistant Professor position for the academic year 2026-2027. Renewal of the position is possible, contingent on strong enrollments, strong performance reviews, and availability of funding.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will teach six courses (three separate preps) in support of the Department's Minor in Criminology, Law and Society: SOC 275 Criminology; SOC 310 Sociology of Deviance; SOC 479 Law and Society. Responsibilities include preparing and presenting instructional content for in-person courses in Criminology, Law and Society. Additional duties include: monitoring and mentoring teaching assistants, holding office hours to meet with students outside of class time, writing and grading examinations, and assigning grades, and departmental service.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Ph.D. in Sociology, or Ph.D. in related areas, evidence of research productivity and a year of teaching experience. Additional expertise in in Law and Society, Criminology or Deviance is preferred.
SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time, 9-month appointment, non-tenure track position, with possible renewable for one year, subject to enrollments, funding, and positive performance evaluations
Target start date is August 16, 2026. The budgeted salary range for the position is $65,000 to $70,000. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship work authorization. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy.
