The Department of Anthropology at Skidmore College invites applications for a two-year, full-time non-tenure track visiting assistant professor position in cultural anthropology (open-area) for AY26-28 beginning Fall 2026.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:

We seek a broadly trained cultural anthropologist with demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching. The position requires teaching 5 courses per year (18 credits), including Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (both semesters), a mid-level geographic or topical course, and two upper-level seminars. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching and a strong commitment to undergraduate education at a liberal arts college. PhD in Anthropology required at time of appointment.

Cover letter with a statement that describes teaching experience and proposed courses;

  • Syllabi for two courses: (1) Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (AN101); and (2) an upper-level seminar for Anthropology majors/minors that examines a theoretical or subject specialization with a strong theoretical component (see course descriptions here: https://catalog.skidmore.edu/departments-programs/anthropology/#coursestext)
  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae or resume; and
  • Contact information for three references.

After an initial review of applications, a short list of candidates will be asked to submit additional materials including academic transcripts and course evaluations, and letters of references will be requested. Zoom interviews, including a teaching demonstration, will be scheduled with selected candidates.
