JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Intercollegiate Department of Africana Studies at the Claremont Colleges invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position. We seek a colleague who teaches and does scholarly work in the field of Africana Studies. The area of specialization is open, though those who can offer courses in performance, popular culture, media studies, visual culture, or alternately, in the quantitative social sciences, are especially encouraged to apply. The contractual college for this position is Pomona College. The teaching load for this position is 5 courses annually and will include courses in the candidate's area of specialty, plus contributions to a rotating schedule of Africana Studies core courses in the major. These are: Introduction to Africana Studies, Research Methods in Africana Studies, and/or Senior Seminar.

We seek a scholar who will contribute to the department's mission of examining, through various academic disciplines, the knowledges and experiences of people of African heritage worldwide. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts teaching and show evidence of a productive program of scholarly research. The candidate is expected to work collaboratively in an intercollegiate setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability or potential to teach and mentor exceptional students of diverse backgrounds—utilizing pedagogical practices that are rigorous, inclusive, and which promote academic equity.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education--Required: A PhD in Africana Studies or a closely related field is preferred but those with PhDs in other disciplines who have certification, demonstrated expertise, and/or scholarly experience specifically in Africana Studies will also be considered

Teaching Experience--Preferred: Demonstrable experience teaching

Please note: This position is not eligible for travel or moving expenses. Employment is contingent upon providing proof of the legal right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 for the duration of the contract, July, 2026 until June 30, 2027. Salary is commensurate with years in rank and teaching experience. The salary range for this role is $75,000-$80,000.

REQUIREMENTS:

The contract start date is July 1, 2026 with instruction beginning on Monday, August 31, 2026 for the fall semester and on Tuesday, January 19th, 2027 for the spring semester. After submitting proof of work authorization and completing onboarding, Visiting Assistant Professors are expected to prepare for their classes and attend the New Faculty Orientation, held in the weeks before classes start in the fall. This non-tenure-track position is instructional and does not require student advising, faculty service or participation in faculty governance.
