Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern European History
Bridgewater College, The Rhodes School and the Department of History and Political Science invite applications for a full-time, 9-month, Visiting Assistant Professor to teach classes in modern European History beginning August 17, 2026.
We are seeking a Modern European Historian who brings student-centered engagement and a passion for the study of history into the college classroom.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Teach lower-level world history survey and upper-division courses in modern European history
- Teach 24 semester credits per year (4-4 distribution)
- Participate in the College’s general education program
- Teach and mentor students within a liberal arts context
WHAT YOU BRING:
- Creativity and innovation in pedagogy and research
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in the department and across campus
PREFERRED:
- Ph.D. in Modern European History (exclusive of Britain).
- Candidates who are ABD will be considered.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Bridgewater College was founded in 1880 as a coeducational liberal arts college to serve the local community. Located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, just minutes outside of Harrisonburg and within driving distance of Charlottesville, Washington D.C., and Richmond, Bridgewater is home to a total student body of approximately 1,450 from 27 states and 19 countries. Bridgewater students study more than 60 majors and minors, in addition to four graduate programs and 10 pre-professional programs.
