Department Summary
The Department of the History of Art & Architecture ("HAA") offers undergraduate, Master's, and PhD programs in the history, theory, and criticism of art, architecture, and visual culture. It is also home to the Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies.
The University of Oregon is one of only two Pacific Northwest members of the Association of American Universities and holds the distinction of a "very high research activity" ranking in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Position Summary
The Department of the History of Art and Architecture is seeking a Visiting Assistant 2026-27 academic year. The successful candidate will teach Seven classes, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We welcome applicants specializing in any aspect of the history of art and architecture of East Asia, but will give preference to candidates who can teach existing courses on Chinese art, Japanese art, or Buddhist art. A list of existing department courses is available at https://design.uoregon.edu/arthistory/courses. A teaching or research focus on transcultural exchange or museum practices is especially welcome. Applicants with related interests in design and urban history are also invited to apply.
Minimum Requirements
- Ph.D. in Art and/or Architectural History or other related field required prior to appointment; ABD may also be considered.
- Visiting faculty must hold a like or relevant position at another institution or have recently obtained a terminal degree.

- Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and facilitate student learning.
- Ability to work cooperatively with diverse faculty and student populations.
- Ability to conduct independent, high-quality scholarship or creative practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent record of scholarly, creative, or other professional accomplishment in relevant field.
- Prior college or university-level teaching experience.
