Job Description:

Longwood University is seeking qualified applicants for a Visiting Scholar / Technician Specializing in Woodworking (M0049) with the Design in Craft program. Longwood University is looking for new and established artists specializing in woodworking, who are interested in gaining valuable teaching experience, having the opportunity to develop their professional scholarship, and are able to organize and maintain studio equipment.

This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University’s campus.

Appointment:

  • The Visiting Scholar/Technician is a three-year appointment, offered annually, running from August through June.

Eligibility:

  • The program is open to artists with an MFA in woodworking
  • Artistic and scholarly merit are the basis for selection
  • Emerging artists and scholars are encouraged to apply

Scholar/Technician Position:

  • 24-hour access to fully equipped studios throughout building
  • $42,000 yearly salary
  • Teaching experience at Longwood University

Scholar/Technician Responsibilities:

  • Attends all departmental meetings
  • Teaches one to two classes per semester
  • Runs woodshop open hours and safety training program
  • Produces scholarly work that is shown yearly alongside the Working Artist Program in April
  • Maintains Bedford Art Gallery in concert with the department Exhibition and Gallery Committee
  • Assists instructional staff in maintenance of studio equipment

Requirements:

The Design in Craft program is open to artists with an MFA in woodworking who demonstrate outstanding artistic and scholarly merit. Emerging artists and scholars are encouraged to apply. Teaching experience required; candidates with demonstrated college teaching experience preferred. A demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of the university mission is required.

Additional Information:

The Visiting Scholar/Technician is an annual appointment at $42,000, running from August to June, and renewable for up to three years. This is a part-time, instructional faculty, exempt position limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1500 hours maximum per work year. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits do not accompany this position. A successful fingerprint-based criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
