Wildlife Officer

About This Opportunity

We are seeking a Wildlife Officer to provide high-quality husbandry and care of native wildlife species in support of teaching and research activities at the Hidden Vale Research Station (HVRS). This role combines practical animal care responsibilities with administrative and supervisory duties, while providing key operational support to the HVRS Manager across a diverse range of facility activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Under general direction, support the day-to-day operations of the Wildlife Centre by assisting senior staff to ensure the smooth and efficient running of facility activities.
  • Provide practical support to staff, researchers, students and volunteers, contributing to a collaborative and positive team environment.
  • Perform standard husbandry and care for native wildlife species, including feeding, cleaning, routine health monitoring and identification, in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Assist with routine breeding program activities such as pairing, weaning, sexing animals, and maintaining studbook and breeding records.
  • Support senior staff in delivering basic instruction to volunteers, students and junior staff on routine care, husbandry practices and safe work procedures.
  • Maintain accurate facility documentation, animal management records and relevant registers in line with regulatory and University requirements.
  • Follow biosecurity, risk management and compliance procedures to maintain the safety, cleanliness and integrity of wildlife holding areas.
  • Assist with facility upkeep, monitoring stock levels of consumables and equipment, and participate in the weekend and public-holiday roster to support ongoing animal care.
  • Prepare and handle restricted drugs under direct supervision, following established protocols.

About You

  • Completion of a degree in Wildlife Science, Biology or Zoology; or completion of a Diploma with relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Foundational knowledge of relevant codes and acts governing the use of animals for scientific purposes.
  • A demonstrated capacity to work within, and lead a functioning team including supervising staff as well as training, and assessing skills acquisition.
  • Demonstrated clear and professional written and spoken communication skills, including the ability to advise research and animal facility staff, present information and written reports.
  • Demonstrated decision making and trouble-shooting skills, utilising background information/experience to take action in the absence of complete information.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and prioritise own time and tasks and work agile across different areas of the Wildlife Centre/Research Station based on general direction from Manager.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the relevant regulatory requirements in regard to Animal Ethics, Biosecurity and Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Sound knowledge of ZIMS (Zoological Information Management Software).

You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment, and may be required to complete background checks including, criminal history and education checks. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.

Medical Clearance: Working with laboratory animals is an inherent requirement of the position. The appointment is therefore subject to, and conditional upon, satisfactory medical clearance(s), including disclosure of relevant medical history, to undertake such work without unreasonable risk to your health and safety. In addition, the Employee is required to fully comply with necessary ongoing health monitoring procedures and control measures associated with the position
