Essential Job Duties:
Join our Facilities Division as a Zone Manager supporting Athletics, where you will lead custodial operations in high-visibility, event-driven facilities. This position performs advanced operational, supervisory, and technical work, ensuring athletic venues are consistently maintained to professional standards that support competitions, practices, and special events.
The Athletics Zone Manager is responsible for strategic planning of services, managing receipts-funded budgets, serving as a subject matter expert in custodial operations, and coordinating staff and resources to meet demanding schedules. This role requires a high level of professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to lead teams in dynamic environments while interacting regularly with coaches, athletes, and facilities partners. Working Hours will be: Monday - Friday 4:00 am - 12:30 pm
Key Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supervise, coach, and assign work to Environmental Services Technicians, ensuring balanced and efficient workloads in athletic facilities
- Address personnel matters, including coaching, conflict resolution, and performance concerns
- Develop, update, and maintain cleaning schedules and service plans that align with athletic events, practices, and operational needs
- Allocate staffing, materials, and equipment to maximize service quality and cost efficiency in high-visibility environments
- Conduct routine quality assurance inspections, document results, and report findings to leadership
- Use inspection data to support performance evaluations and identify training and development needs
- Identify building deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions to maintain readiness for events
- Establish and manage emergency response and contingency plans for athletic operations and special events
- Facilitate required safety, policy, compliance, and data security training for staff
- Deliver regular safety topics and daily operational briefings
- Serve as a subject matter expert in custodial operations within athletic environments
- Manage receipts-funded budgets with awareness of financial impact and operational demands
- Track inventory, reporting, and usage of supplies, uniforms, and equipment using the AiM system
- Research and evaluate equipment, tools, and supplies for economical and environmentally responsible use
- Identify non-functional equipment, tag items, and submit maintenance work orders
- Approve timesheets and leave requests weekly
- Lead daily operations and team meetings focused on safety, priorities, and assignments
- Interact regularly with coaches, athletes, and athletics facilities staff while maintaining exceptional professionalism
- Coordinate with facility planning staff regarding renovations, closures, or space changes
- Maintain familiarity with assigned facility floor plans and service requirements
- Ensure proper handling and storage of custodial equipment and chemicals
- Communicates effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public, and follows verbal and written instructions related to work assignments and operational needs
- Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 30-60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Conduct and attend meetings with University clients
- This position is considered essential personnel and may be required to report to campus under adverse weather conditions
- Perform snow and ice removal within a team environment during inclement weather under the direction of the Associate Director, in addition to coordinating with co-workers during group responses to emergencies
- Perform team cleaning tasks and projects during breaks and when space is accessible
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Minimum Experience/Education:
High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require Certification or eligibility for Certification.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be able to effectively operate a computer and drive a vehicle
- Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisor and the general public. Must be able to follow instructions and other communications regarding assignments and other matters
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel and Word, along with use of Google mail and other Internet based mail systems and programs
- Experience supervising employees
- Experience with EVS duties
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds frequently and 60-90 pounds occasionally
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing teams of varying sizes.
- Experience in environmental services or facility operations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), Google Mail, and other internet-based systems.
- Proven experience managing staff, including assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and providing training or guidance.
- APPA, IFMA, or BOMA certification preferred.
Required license or certification:
- Valid driver's license required.
- Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
