Midwest Technical Institute and Delta Technical College Academic Calendar

Introduction to the Academic Structure at Midwest Technical Institute and Delta Technical College

The academic calendar at Midwest Technical Institute and Delta Technical College, located in Horn Lake, Mississippi, follows a unique year-round modular format tailored for vocational and technical training. Unlike traditional universities with fixed semesters, this institution operates on a continuous enrollment model where programs are divided into 5-week modules, allowing students to start frequently throughout the year. This structure supports working adults, career changers, and high school graduates seeking rapid entry into skilled trades such as HVAC/R, welding, cosmetology, dental assisting, medical assisting, CDL truck driving, and more. The flexibility minimizes downtime, with classes typically held Monday through Thursday or Friday evenings, enabling part-time work alongside studies.

Historically, as sister institutions under the same ownership, Midwest Technical Institute and Delta Technical College have evolved to meet regional workforce demands in the Mississippi Delta and Midwest regions. Their catalogs emphasize hands-on lab work, externships, and industry certifications, contrasting with four-year colleges' lecture-heavy approaches. Students benefit from small class sizes—often capped at 20-35—and direct instructor access, fostering practical skills over theoretical knowledge. This impacts retention and employability, with graduates like those placed at Schneider Trucking highlighting success stories.

Admissions are rolling, requiring a high school diploma or equivalent, interview, and fees paid by day one. International students may face additional visa hurdles but can inquire via campus tours. Holidays align with U.S. federal observances—no classes on New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving (and following day), and Christmas—with make-up hours mandatory. Breaks like summer and winter provide short respites, but the year-round pace suits motivated learners. Parents planning family travel around these, faculty coordinating work schedules, or students tracking rival school events find this calendar invaluable. Compared to community colleges, the accelerated timeline—7-13 months per program—accelerates careers. Inviting current students to rate their professors helps prospective ones gauge teaching quality.
