Great Professor!
Dr. Adam Komarek serves as Senior Lecturer in Agribusiness within the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability at the University of Queensland. He earned his Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney. Komarek's research specializes in agricultural economics, with key interests encompassing agribusiness development, rural livelihoods, value chain competitiveness, sustainable diets, farm diversification strategies, greenhouse gas mitigation in livestock systems, and risk management in agriculture. His work addresses critical challenges in global food systems, including transitions to healthier diets while conserving land and water resources, intensification in crop-livestock systems, and policy interventions for agrifood sectors.
Prior to his current role, Komarek was a Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute. He has produced over 77 scholarly outputs since 2006, including 43 journal articles featured in prestigious outlets such as Nature Food, Nature Sustainability, and Agricultural Systems. Select publications include: "High-yield dairy cattle breeds improve farmer incomes, curtail greenhouse gas emissions and reduce dairy import dependency in Tanzania" (Nature Food, 2022), "Progress towards healthy diets remains slow" (Nature Food, 2023), "A framework for the assessment of farm diversification options in broadacre agriculture" (Agricultural Systems, 2023), and "Meeting the EAT-Lancet ‘healthy’ diet target while protecting land and water resources" (Nature Sustainability, 2024). Komarek contributes to PhD supervision as principal advisor for multiple students focusing on livelihoods in seaweed farming, cropping patterns in Bangladesh, livestock sustainability in Africa, and cocoa value chains. He serves on the editorial board of Agricultural Systems and has secured competitive funding, such as from CSIRO for the National Risk Management Initiative (2023–2027) and the Grains Research & Development Corporation for Analytics for the Australian Grains Industry (2023–2027). His research informs policy and practice in sustainable agriculture across Africa, Asia, and Australia.
