Alan Burkard, Ph.D., is Professor, Department Chair, and Director of School Counseling in the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology at Marquette University’s College of Education. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University in 1996 and his M.Ed. in Counselor Education from The Pennsylvania State University in 1983, along with a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Licensed as a psychologist in the State of Wisconsin, he serves as a consulting psychologist at the Behavior Clinic at Penfield Children’s Center and Penfield Montessori Academy, focusing on mental health and trauma treatment for young children. At Marquette, he teaches courses including Introduction to Counseling, Supervision, Practicum, Introduction to Group Counseling, Personality Assessment, Multicultural Counseling, Career Counseling, Consultation Strategies, and Research Methods. He advises counseling psychology doctoral students on outcome research and evaluation for the Early Pathways treatment model.
Dr. Burkard’s research specializations include the influence of culture on psychotherapy and clinical supervision, multicultural counseling, counselor supervision and training, and culturally responsive mental health and trauma treatment for young children from ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds. He has obtained major grants such as the $1.9 million Trauma-Informed Care for Very Young Children Project from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (2021-2026), a $2.66 million award from the U.S. Department of Education for school counselor training, and funding from the Bader Philanthropies, Argosy Foundation, and Zilber Family Foundation for the Behavior Clinic.
