Allan Dougan serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) Inc., the national peak body representing mathematics educators across Australia. In this leadership role, he drives national advocacy, professional learning, and strategic initiatives to enhance mathematics teaching and learning. Dougan possesses more than 20 years of experience as a teacher, school leader, and education executive, spanning Australia, the United Kingdom, and international contexts. He trained as a Secondary Mathematics teacher in Scotland, holding various school leadership positions and earning recognition as Scottish Teacher of the Year Runner Up. Upon relocating to Australia, he worked as a teacher of merit in New South Wales schools, assuming middle and senior leadership responsibilities. Later, he advanced to Global Head of Education at an ASX-listed education technology company, directing the global education strategy and presenting professional learning sessions worldwide.
Under Dougan's stewardship at AAMT, key projects include the Pedagogy in Mathematics position paper, which provides a research-informed framework emphasizing understanding, fluency, and purposeful classroom practices. He has managed extensive professional learning programs, national funding for schools in low socio-economic areas, and partnerships with organizations like the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in the USA. As a frequent keynote speaker and workshop leader, Dougan promotes engaging, relevant mathematics instruction that prioritizes teacher professionalism, effective pedagogy for equitable outcomes, and mathematics education's vital role in societal participation and economic contribution. He holds directorships at the Australian Alliance of Associations in Education, Australian Maths Trust, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA), alongside membership on the National Committee for Mathematical Sciences of the Australian Academy of Science. Dougan is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Adelaide University and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
