About Ammar

Professor Ammar Abdul Aziz is Professor of Agribusiness and Deputy Head of School in the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability at the University of Queensland. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland in 2015, with a thesis on integrating a REDD+ project into mangrove forest management in Malaysia. He also holds a Masters (Research) in Investment and Risk Management from Bayes Business School, and Bachelor degrees in Finance and Business Economics from Hawaii Pacific University. Before joining academia, he worked over eight years as an agropreneur in Malaysia, engaging in research and development collaborations with the Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute. Early in his UQ career at the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences in Gatton, he contributed to trans-disciplinary projects on cotton, rubber, and oil palm.

Professor Abdul Aziz's research centers on developing sustainable agribusiness models for smallholder farmers in developing countries, emphasizing technology adoption, financial and risk management, and improved management practices to boost sustainability and livelihoods. His expertise spans food systems value chains, smallholder production resilience, remote sensing, spatial analysis, farm management, and sustainable agricultural development. He leads major grants including ACIAR projects on weed management in mechanized rice systems in Laos and Cambodia (2021-2026), sustainable rice value chains in Vietnam (2022-2026), and seaweed mapping in Indonesia; GRDC-funded Analytics for the Australian Grains Industry (2023-2027); and DFAT KONEKSI initiatives on peri-urban food systems. Key publications include 'Food packaging: identifying the socio-economic drivers and reduction opportunities through system dynamics modelling' (Globalization and Health, 2026), 'Consumers' preferences and willingness to pay for safety and quality attributes in milk' (Appetite, 2026), 'Impact of factors contributing to internal disorders of mango fruit—a systematic literature review' (Scientia Horticulturae, 2024), and 'Agriculture development through multi-stakeholder partnerships in developing countries: a systematic literature review' (Agricultural Systems, 2024). His work influences agribusiness policy and practices in Southeast Asia through applied, industry-linked research.
