Andrew Pope is a dedicated instructor at Adelaide University, actively contributing to the delivery of specialized courses in outdoor and environmental education across the School of Education and the School of Allied Health and Human Performance. His teaching portfolio includes Foundations of Outdoor Leadership (SPOR 2005), where he instructs students in planning, preparing, and leading outdoor journeys that foster personal, social, cultural, and environmental learning in contexts such as outdoor education, recreation, nature-based tourism, and adventure therapy. Key elements covered encompass field skills, outdoor education leadership theories and practices, and professional applications, enabling students to identify safe leadership practices, implement effective field trips, demonstrate foundational skills, and evaluate expedition learning potential through professional reports.
In Leadership in Aquatic Environments (SPOR 3006), Pope guides participants in developing professional leadership abilities for aquatic settings, including planning activities like kayaking, managing risks in complex environments, instructing safe practices, and responding to critical incidents to achieve learning, therapeutic, or developmental outcomes. The course emphasizes journeys in aquatic environments, leading practices, and professionalism. Furthermore, in Nature-Based Pedagogies and Practices for Primary and Middle Years (EDUCX 424), he supports pre-service teachers in acquiring essential knowledge for outdoor learning experiences, focusing on evaluating student needs, inclusive practices, curriculum design, pedagogical strategies, teacher-student relationships, and assessments tailored to school contexts. Learning outcomes include describing learner needs, planning units and lessons, applying pedagogies, and reflecting on teaching effectiveness in outdoor environmental education. Pope's commitment to the field is evidenced by the Peter Kellett Meritorious Service to Outdoor Education award he received in 2019, shared with Lesley-Ann Pope and Cath Warnecke from the Outdoor Education Association of South Australia.
