Rate My Professor Barbara Adonteng-Kissi

Dr. Barbara Adonteng-Kissi serves as a Lecturer in the Social Work Discipline within the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University. She earned her PhD from Griffith University in Australia, along with an MPhil and a BA in Social Work. Her teaching portfolio encompasses social work theories, ageing and aged care in Australia, groupwork, human service organisations, and social work field education. Through her pedagogy, she actively engages students in direct practice experiences, skills development, group work facilitation, and community development initiatives. Dr. Adonteng-Kissi is recognised as a distinguished social work educator and researcher whose scholarly work is profoundly shaped by her Ghanaian cultural heritage. She fosters strong collaborative ties with community organisations and contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through her community-oriented efforts.

Dr. Adonteng-Kissi's research centres on the lived experiences of older individuals and their family carers who manage chronic life-limiting illnesses and deliver informal care in rural Ghana. Her investigations explore strategies to bolster social structures, thereby enhancing the quality of life for older people and their carers amid chronic illness. She also examines enablers and barriers to expanding social work placements within residential aged care facilities in Australia. Notable publications include 'Informal care of older adults with chronic life-limiting illness in Africa: An integrative review' published in 2022 in International Social Work; 'Family and Community Role in the Provision of Informal Care for Older People Living with Chronic Life-Limiting Illnesses in Rural Ghana' in Social Policy and Society in 2025; 'Transition support for new graduate nurses to rural and remote practice: A scoping review' co-authored in 2019; and 'Support for older people living with chronic life-limiting illnesses in rural Ghana' in 2025. She participates in the Resilient Ageing in Supportive Environments research team at Southern Cross University, advancing knowledge in ageing and supportive care environments.
