Dr. Brett Tarca is a Lecturer in Clinical Exercise Physiology in the School of Allied Health and Human Performance, College of Health, at Adelaide University. He is an exercise physiologist specializing in chronic kidney disease. Dr. Tarca obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Australia (2020–2023), Masters by Research in Health Science from the University of South Australia (2018–2020), and Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology from the University of South Australia (2013–2016). His research focuses on the role of exercise therapy in end-stage kidney disease, particularly the effectiveness of early movement-based interventions on high-priority patient outcomes for people commencing dialysis. Research interests include endocrinology and metabolism, exercise, exercise physiology, medical and health sciences, and metabolic medicine. He is eligible to supervise Masters and PhD students as a co-supervisor.
Dr. Tarca's key publications include "Modifiable physical factors that influence physical function for people receiving peritoneal dialysis" (Kidney International Reports, 2024), "Exercise or physical activity-related adverse events in people receiving peritoneal dialysis: a systematic review" (Peritoneal Dialysis International, 2022), "Physical activity and exercise in peritoneal dialysis: International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis and the Global Renal Exercise Network practice recommendations" (Peritoneal Dialysis International, 2022), and "Modifiable physical factors associated with physical functioning for patients receiving dialysis: A systematic review" (Journal of Physical Activity and Health, 2020). He leads the grant "The Effect of an Exercise Program on Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes: A Feasibility Study (CORE-PD)" funded by The Hospital Research Foundation (2024–2026). Dr. Tarca collaborates with the Central Northern Adelaide Renal Transplantation Service (since 2018) and serves as Chair of the Early Career Researcher Group (since 2021) and on the Organising Committee of the Global Renal Exercise Network.
