About Camilla

Camilla Penney is a Lecturer in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury. She holds a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Cambridge, awarded in 2019. Her research focuses on earthquakes, tectonics, and seismic risk, with current work centred on earthquake simulators and developing statistical methods to link real earthquake records with long-term computer simulations.

Prior to her role at the University of Canterbury, Penney was affiliated with the University of Cambridge, including as a Junior Research Fellow in Earth Sciences. She teaches and coordinates Geodynamics and Tectonics at the 300 level and contributes to undergraduate courses including GEOL102, GEOL244, and GEOL331. In 2026, she received a $100,000 grant from the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake Biennial Grants programme to advance understanding of future earthquake hazards and their impacts.
