Charles Giacco, MRAeS, FCL, serves as Lecturer in Aviation (Law) within the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Adelaide University’s College of Engineering and Information Technology. With over three decades of experience since 1993, he has taught and coordinated tertiary law subjects across Australia and overseas at various universities and TAFE institutes. His academic roles have encompassed delivering core Priestley 11 subjects for the Bachelor of Laws, commercial law units in Bachelor of Business and Master of Business Administration programs, and law subjects in the Advanced Diploma of Legal Practice. Admitted as an Australian legal practitioner in the Supreme Courts of Victoria, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, as well as all Commonwealth courts, Giacco has also practiced law professionally. His qualifications include PhD candidacy in Law (University of Melbourne), Master of Applied Law (College of Law), Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Monash University), Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education (University of Melbourne), Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and Graduate Fellow of the College of Law.
Giacco lectures and coordinates aviation law and aviation business courses in the Bachelor of Aviation programs, emphasizing industry engagement, real-life applications, and student career outcomes. His research specializations center on aviation law and civil aviation, with doctoral research examining the regulation of airport development and sustainability in Australia and China. He has earned recognition awards for teaching excellence and outstanding industry engagement. Notable publications include “Unruly airline passengers: High time for a legal rethink?” (2019, co-authored with C. Zhang, ALAA conference), “PTSD as a bodily injury: Close, but not close enough” (2018, co-authored with M. Tsai, ALTA conference), and “Crossing the divide? The transitional experiences of paralegal studies graduates in the LLB” (2012, Journal of the Institute of Legal Executives (Victoria)). Giacco contributes to the field as a committee member of the Aviation Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (ALAANZ) Victoria Branch, national student membership coordinator for ALAANZ, co-founder and co-convener of the Australia and New Zealand Air Law Moot, and committee member of the Royal Aeronautical Society Adelaide Branch.
