Ms Charlotte Chalklen serves as a Lecturer in the School of Communication, Media and Journalism, part of the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities at Adelaide University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of South Australia. In her academic role, she coordinates the course Media Law and Ethics (COMM 2076) and tutors subjects such as Journalism Research Capstone and Advanced Professional Writing. Her teaching approach emphasizes engaging students, providing essential knowledge, and empowering them to develop their unique strengths for thriving careers in the dynamic fields of media and professional communication. Chalklen is available for media comment on relevant topics. Her courses include Media Law and Ethics and Advanced Professional Writing in 2024 and 2025.
Chalklen's academic interests and research specializations include news and feature writing, media law and ethics, social media and privacy issues, and diversity within the creative industries. Her thesis focused on the use of Facebook by mothers of young children, informing her publication: Chalklen, C., & Anderson, H. (2017). Mothering on Facebook: Exploring the Privacy/Openness Paradox. Social Media + Society, 3(2), 1-10. This work examines the tension between privacy and openness in online sharing. She co-authored “ ‘The devil is in the level’: understanding inequality in Australia’s film, TV and radio industries” (Luckman, S., Anderson, H., Sinha, R., Rentschler, R., & Chalklen, C., 2020, Media International Australia, 176(1), 3-18). She has also contributed to The Conversation with pieces like an analysis of Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation (2022). Prior to her current position at Adelaide University, previously associated with UniSA Creative, Chalklen held roles as journalist, editor, media coordinator, communication consultant, tutor, and research assistant. Her industry experience enriches her contributions to academia.
