Chongle Pan is a Professor of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He holds an appointment as Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science, Gallogly College of Engineering, and in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology. Pan is also affiliated with the Data Science and Analytics Institute and contributes to OU Health research efforts. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2006 and his B.S. in Computer Science from East China Normal University, China. Prior to joining the University of Oklahoma, Pan served as Senior Research Scientist and Research Scientist in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Pan's research focuses on bioinformatics, including metagenomics, metaproteomics, quantitative proteomics, microbial community analysis, metabolomics, proteogenomics, human microbiomes, environmental microbiology, prebiotics, and probiotics. He applies artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques, such as explainable machine learning and computer vision, alongside parallel computing and data science methods, to enable knowledge discovery in bioinformatics and scalable analysis of large omics datasets. His publications have significantly influenced the field, amassing over 6,600 citations. Key works include "Integrated metagenomics/metaproteomics reveals human host-microbiota signatures of Crohn's disease" (PLoS ONE, 2012); "Systematic comparison of label-free, metabolic labeling, and isobaric chemical labeling for quantitative proteomics on LTQ Orbitrap Velos" (Journal of Proteome Research, 2012); "Effects of Diet on Resource Utilization by a Model Human Gut Microbiota Containing Bacteroides cellulosilyticus WH2, a Symbiont with an Extensive Glycobiome" (PLoS Biology, 2013); "Community proteogenomics reveals the systemic impact of phosphorus availability on microbial functions in tropical soil" (Nature Ecology & Evolution, 2018); and "Sipros Ensemble improves database searching and filtering for complex metaproteomics" (Bioinformatics, 2018). Pan teaches courses like Parallel, Distributed, and Network Programming (CS 4473/5473) and directs the CIDR Core in the Center for Oklahoma Biomedical Imaging and Research Excellence.
