Dr Chris Krolikowski is a Lecturer in the School of Management within the College of Business and Law at Adelaide University. He serves as Program Coordinator for Tourism & Event, Sport & Recreation, and Art & Cultural Management. With a background in both industry and academia, Krolikowski possesses extensive knowledge of tourism, events, and hospitality. He has substantial experience in curriculum design in the tertiary sector in Australia, including the development of online courses, and is an active contributor to teaching innovation at the College of Business and Law. Having completed postgraduate studies in digital learning, he works closely with industry partners to create curricula that foster student engagement and critical thinking skills. His teaching responsibilities include courses such as TOUR 1001 Fundamentals of Global Tourism & Hospitality, TOUR 2006 Experiential Product Design for Tourism, Events and Hospitality, TOUR 2014 UO Experiential Product Design for Tourism, Events and Hospitality, and TOUR 3010 Digital Technologies in Tourism, Events and Hospitality.
Krolikowski's research focuses on urban tourism, urban regeneration, placemaking, events, sustainability, the value of tourism, events, arts, and culture to placemaking, the impact of overtourism, and sustainability in tourism destinations. He applies interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of tourism and events. Key publications include 'Developing a sense of place through attendance and involvement in local events: the social sustainability perspective' (Tourism Recreation Research, 2024, with I. S. Son), 'Intention to attend local events in the time of COVID-19: the case of Australia' (Event Management, 2023, with I. S. Son and E. Fleming), 'Utilizing events for placemaking of precincts and main streets: current state and critical success factors' (Event Management, 2022, with I. S. Son, R. Rentschler, and S. S. Huang), and 'Degrowing tourism: rethinking tourism' (Journal of Sustainable Tourism, 2019, with F. Higgins-Desbiolles, S. Carnicelli, G. Wijesinghe, and K. Boluk). He has also authored book chapters such as 'Re-thinking tourism: degrowth and equity rights in developing community-centric tourism' (2020) and 'The Structure and Form of Urban Tourism Precincts: Setting the Stage for Tourist Performances' (2010 and 2008), as well as the report 'Activating Adelaide's precincts: placemaking through culture, arts and events' (2017, with R. Rentschler et al.). Krolikowski received a grant for 'Value of events: Beyond the short-term economic impact' from the LCB-UniSA Research Grant Scheme and the City of Port Adelaide-Enfield (2019-2023). He is a member of the Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) and the Centre for Enterprise Dynamics in Global Economies (C-EDGE), and acts as a reviewer for top journals including Tourism Management. He is eligible to supervise Masters and PhD students as co-supervisor.
