Christo Buizert is an Associate Professor in the Geology and Geophysics unit of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. He earned his PhD in geophysics from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen in 2012, following earlier studies at Delft University of Technology. Buizert joined Oregon State University as a postdoctoral scholar with Dr. Edward Brook in 2012. He was subsequently appointed Assistant Professor (Senior Research) and advanced to his current position as Associate Professor. His research centers on reconstructing past climate change and atmospheric composition using deep ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica. Buizert integrates numerical modeling, data analysis, ice core measurements, and fieldwork to investigate Greenland climate variability, inter-hemispheric climate coupling, ice core chronologies and dating, abrupt climate change, and firn processes. As a member of the OSU Ice Core & Quaternary Geochemistry Lab, he contributes to projects such as the NSF Science and Technology Center COLDEX, focusing on very old ice cores and glacier variations.
Buizert's influential publications include 'Centennial-scale changes in the global carbon cycle during the last deglaciation' (Nature, 2014), 'Precise interpolar phasing of abrupt climate change during the last ice age' (Nature, 2015), 'Greenland temperature response to climate forcing during the last deglaciation' (Science, 2014), 'Eemian interglacial reconstructed from a Greenland folded ice core' (Nature, 2013), and 'Preindustrial 14CH4 indicates greater anthropogenic fossil CH4 emissions' (Nature, 2020). His scholarship has been cited nearly 9,900 times. Buizert has received the 2025 Oregon State University Day Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award, the 2018 European Geosciences Union Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award, and the 2023 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship. He actively advises graduate students, accepting new advisees, and participates in international paleoclimate research efforts.
