Clifton Mayfield, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Management in the College of Business at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, where he joined the faculty in 2007. Prior to academia, he worked for 13 years in the computer and information technology sector, holding management positions in product development, systems design/integration, and system support services. Mayfield earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the State University of New York at Albany in 2008 and his M.B.A. from the University of Arizona in 1999. His teaching focuses on organizational behavior, organizational theory, teamwork and leadership, and human resource management. Areas of expertise include organizational behavior, organizational theory, teamwork and leadership, self-conception and organizational identification, and management education.
Mayfield maintains an active research agenda with three primary streams: positive leadership's impact on organizational and personal outcomes, teamwork processes and team effectiveness, and identity cognitions' influence on organizational behavior. He has published in journals including International Journal of Organizational Analysis, Journal of Education for Business, Organization Management Journal, Journal of Organizational Culture, Communications, and Conflict, Management Research Review, Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship, Journal of Applied and Business Economics, and Journal of Small Business Strategy. Key publications are 'An Expanded Holistic Model of Healthy Workplace Practices' (O’Donnell, Ruth-Sahd, & Mayfield, 2019), 'Why peer evaluations in student teams don’t tell us what we think they do' (Mayfield & Tombaugh, 2018), 'A dyadic approach to examining the emotional intelligence–work outcome relationship: The mediating role of LMX' (Lee, Mayfield, Hinojosa, & Im, 2018), 'Psychological collectivism and team effectiveness: Moderating effects of trust and psychological safety' (Mayfield, Tombaugh, & Lee, 2016), 'Spiritual expression at work: Exploring the active voice of workplace spirituality' (Tombaugh & Mayfield, 2011), and 'The effects of firm performance on corporate governance' (Valenti, Luce, & Mayfield, 2011). A contributing member of the Academy of Management and Southern Management Association, he serves as associate editor for the Small Business Institute Journal. Awards include the Excellence in Teaching Award from The National Society of Leadership and Success (2014) and multiple Faculty Development and Support Fund Awards. He has been recognized by UHCL for teaching over 5,000 students.
