Dr. Diane Velasquez is a Senior Lecturer in Information Management and Research Degree Coordinator for Computer and Information Science in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, College of Engineering and Information Technology at Adelaide University. She has been with the Information Management program for over 12 years, teaching courses including Information Management Foundations, Readers' Advisory and Collections, Digital Literacy, and the Master IM Research Project. Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD students, she is available for media comment. Velasquez earned her PhD from the University of Missouri in 2007, a Graduate Certificate from the same institution in 2005, an MA from the University of Arizona in 2002, an MBA from Golden Gate University in 1991, and a BA from San Jose State University in 1985. Prior to her current role, which transitioned from the University of South Australia, she served as Assistant Professor at Dominican University from 2007 to 2012.
Her research interests encompass web evaluation of public library websites, romance genre literature, marketing of libraries, administration and management of libraries in GLAMR sectors, and the student experience in online postgraduate programs, within broader areas of library and information studies and librarianship. Notable publications include "A bibliotherapy intervention to improve emotional wellbeing during cancer treatment: a pilot study" (2025, Journal of Psychosocial Oncology Research and Practice), "Measuring digital accessibility in New Zealand public libraries" (2025, Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association), "Library website evaluation: How do the Australian states compare" and "Romance genre and collection management in Australian and New Zealand public libraries" (both 2024, Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association), and "Is your library missing information? An evaluation and comparison of public library websites in Australia, Canada, and the United States" (2022, Journal of Web Librarianship). Velasquez has co-investigated grants such as the Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation grant for co-designing a reading intervention for children with cancer (2024-25, $194,778 AUD) and the Romance Writers of America Grant for studying librarians’ perceptions of romance readers (2020-21, $2,500 USD). She serves as Treasurer of the Australian Society of Archivists Council since 2024 and has contributed as guest editor for the Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association in 2018, alongside memberships in ALIA, ASIS&T, and RIMPA.
