Professor Emmanuel Chabata is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), where he serves as the Executive Director for Quality Assurance and Professional Development (QA & PD) since October 2023. He earned his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Oslo, Norway, and holds a Master of Arts, Bachelor of Arts Special Honours, and Bachelor of Arts General degrees from UZ. His academic career at UZ began in 1997 as a Teaching Assistant, advancing to permanent Research Fellow in 2000, Senior Research Fellow in 2012, Associate Research Professor in 2015, and Full Professor in 2024. Previously, he was Acting Director of the African Languages Research Institute (ALRI) in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities from 2012 to 2020, and Academic Programmes Specialist in the QA & PD Directorate from 2020. As Associate Research Professor at ALRI, his work centered on African languages and lexicography.
In his current leadership role, Professor Chabata has driven significant advancements in higher education quality assurance, spearheading the accreditation of UZ's new academic programmes by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) in 2020 and leading the university's re-accreditation in December 2023. He facilitates workshops on programme development, module design, new lecturer induction, standard operating procedures, and Education 5.0 teaching methodologies, and participates in ZIMCHE activities as a peer reviewer and team leader for institutional and academic audits. He contributed to the organising team for the 2024 Southern African Quality Assurance Network Conference in Zambia. His research specializations encompass quality assurance and professional development in higher education, alongside lexicography, terminology development, computational linguistics, translation, onomastics, and language planning and policy, areas in which he has published extensively, including 'The Nambya Verb with Special Emphasis on the Causative' (PhD thesis), 'Shona-Chinese Dictionary' (2015), and 'Zimbabwe Naming Practices and Patterns' (editor, 2017). Professor Chabata has served as a visiting scholar and external examiner at institutions such as Midlands State University, University of Botswana, University of Pretoria, University of Oslo, Renmin University of China, and University of Wisconsin.
