Gianpaolo Fusari serves as Head of Products and Platforms at the Helix Centre within the Department of Surgery & Cancer, Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. He is an award-winning Industrial Designer with over 15 years of experience in product design and development specifically in healthcare settings. At the Helix Centre, Fusari has applied his expertise to a range of impactful projects, including efforts to improve uptake of bowel cancer screening programmes, solutions to reduce pressure ulcers caused by oxygen therapies, and leading rehabilitation research. In particular, he collaborates with individuals with lived experience and clinicians to develop innovative tools such as OnTrack Rehab, aimed at enhancing arm rehabilitation for stroke survivors. His work emphasizes patient-centered design and digital health innovations to address real-world clinical challenges and improve health outcomes.
Prior to his current role, Fusari was a Senior Research Associate at the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, where he led the groundbreaking redesign of the UK emergency ambulance. This project garnered the prestigious Design Museum Design of the Year Award as well as the Industrial Designers Society of America IDEA Award, underscoring his significant contributions to emergency healthcare infrastructure and design. Fusari holds a joint MA in Innovation Design Engineering from the Royal College of Art and an MSc in Innovation Design Engineering from Imperial College London. His research interests encompass clinical sciences, health services and systems research, public health, other health sciences, and biomedical engineering. Through these endeavors, he advances multidisciplinary approaches to healthcare design and innovation at Imperial College London.
