Dr Helen Weston serves as Lecturer in Information Management in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, College of Engineering and Information Technology at Adelaide University. Her extensive academic background includes a PhD from Queensland University of Technology (2012-2018), with a thesis titled 'The cultural dimensions of information use among Emirati postgraduate students,' a Graduate Diploma in Teacher Librarianship from QUT (2000-2002), a Master of Education from James Cook University (1996-1998), a Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland (1984), and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland (1981-1983). Prior to her current role, Weston held positions such as Course Coordinator at the University of South Australia (2024-present) and Library Manager at Higher Colleges of Technology (2012-2015). She teaches courses including INFS 5134 Research Services in Academic Libraries and INFS 5139 Information Resources in 2024 and 2025.
Weston's research focuses on Information and Library Sciences and Library and Information Studies, with key interests in information use, information literacy, e-learning, and citizen science. Her publications include 'The cultural dimensions of information use: A mixed methods approach to the information use experience of Emiratis in Higher Education' (Journal of Culture and Values in Education, 2020), 'The cultural dimensions of information use: A focus on the experience of Emirati students in higher education' (Journal of Culture and Values in Education, 2021), 'Beyond Temporary Experts: Secondary Students’ Experiences in Autonomous Research' (Access, 2022), 'An Evidence-based Partnership: Embedding a Research Skills Program in Higher Education' (European Conference on Information Literacy, 2015), and 'How Do Higher Education Emirati Students Experience Information Use? A Mixed Methods Approach to Research' (European Conference on Information Literacy, 2015). She has earned awards such as Queensland Library Achiever of the Year 2025 from the Australian Library and Information Association and TeachX Innovation in Teaching 2024 from the Queensland College of Teachers. Weston is Convener of the ALIA School Library Special Interest Group (2023-present), a member of ALIA (2015-present) and Queensland College of Teachers (1984-present), and has presented on citizen science in school libraries, gamification for reading enjoyment, and community engagement at conferences including the Australian Citizen Science Conference (2023), ALIA National Conference (2024), and International Conference of International Coalition of Girls Schools (2024).
