Dr. Hendra Gunosewoyo is a Senior Lecturer in the Curtin Medical School, Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biotechnology with First Class Honours and University Medal from the University of Sydney from 2002 to 2005. He completed his PhD in Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Sydney in early 2010 under the supervision of Professor Michael Kassiou and Associate Professor Mark Coster. Following his PhD, he undertook postdoctoral research as a Research Associate with Professor Alan P. Kozikowski in the Drug Discovery Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 2011 to 2013.
In 2013, Gunosewoyo joined the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at Curtin University as a Research Fellow, advancing to Lecturer in 2015 and Senior Lecturer in 2019. His research specializes in medicinal chemistry, with a focus on designing and synthesizing novel inhibitors for infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis. He targets mycobacterial kinases and phosphatases such as PknG, MPtpA, MPtpB, and SapM to enhance host immune responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Additional interests include neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation, cannabinoids, and glycogen synthase kinase-3β inhibitors. He is involved with the Curtin Medical Research Institute in inflammation, infectious disease, and wounds research. Notable publications include 'Identification of Novel Coumestan Derivatives as Polyketide Synthase 13 Inhibitors against Mycobacterium tuberculosis' (Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 2018), 'Indoleamides are active against drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis' (Nature Communications, 2013), 'Tuberculosis: Pathogenesis, Current Treatment Regimens and New Drug Candidates' (Pharmaceutics, 2023), and 'Combating Tuberculosis via Restoring the Host Immune Capacity by Targeting M. tb Kinases and Phosphatases' (International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2024). Gunosewoyo supervises Honours, Masters, and PhD students and coordinates units in bioscience practice.
