About Iain

Professor Iain Martin is Vice-Chancellor and President of Deakin University, a role he has held since July 2019. Previously, he served as Vice-Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom. At the University of Auckland in New Zealand, he held positions including Professor of Surgery, Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for strategic engagement. A trained surgeon, Professor Martin studied medicine at the University of Leeds, where he also completed postgraduate studies in surgery, a doctorate, and a Master of Education. He progressed from Lecturer in Surgery at Leeds University to Consultant Surgeon at Leeds General Infirmary, with a clinical focus on gastrointestinal cancer and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Professor Martin leads Deakin University’s strategic and academic vision, emphasizing balanced excellence in education and research. He has guided the institution through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and was reappointed in 2023 for a further five-year term commencing in May 2024. His work includes contributions to national discussions on the future of higher education, such as a white paper addressing the social licence of Australian universities and efforts to rebuild public trust in the sector. Professor Martin is committed to the social and economic development of the Geelong region and Victoria.
