About Ian

Professor Ian Head is Professor of Environmental Microbiology and Dean of Research & Innovation in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Newcastle University. He obtained a First Class Honours B.Sc. in Applied Microbiology from the University of Strathclyde in 1986 and a Ph.D. from Newcastle University in 1989 on plasmid-encoded catabolism of the insecticide carbofuran. Over 30 years, he has led interdisciplinary research with engineers, Earth scientists, and environmental experts, securing £2.5 million in grants from NERC, BBSRC, and EPSRC since 1993, alongside £1.5 million from industrial collaborations. His research unravels microbial controls on biogeochemical processes in natural and engineered environments, focusing on microbial ecology, molecular microbial ecology, geomicrobiology, hydrocarbon biodegradation, and microbiology of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. He contributes to postgraduate teaching in microbiology, microbial physiology, and biogeochemistry.

Head has held senior editorial roles on world-leading journals and served on national and international panels and advisory boards. Awards include the 2004 International Society for Microbial Ecology Young Investigator Award, election to the European Academy of Microbiology, and UK ISME Ambassador status. Highly influential publications encompass 'Quantifying the roles of immigration and chance in shaping prokaryote community structure' (2006), 'Biological activity in the deep subsurface and the origin of heavy oil' (2003), 'Marine microorganisms make a meal of oil' (2006), 'Crude-oil biodegradation via methanogenesis in subsurface petroleum reservoirs' (2008), and recent works on microbial fuel cells for wastewater energy recovery and bioelectrochemical sensors, such as 'No re-calibration required? Stability of a bioelectrochemical sensor for biodegradable organic matter over 800 days' (2021). His contributions have advanced bioremediation, oil reservoir microbiology, and sustainable bioenergy technologies.
