Professor Jacek Jasieniak is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University, where he also serves as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure). He completed a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours from Flinders University in 2003, receiving the University Medal, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Melbourne in 2008, awarded the Chancellor’s Prize under the supervision of Professor Paul Mulvaney. Following his doctorate, Jasieniak undertook postdoctoral research as an OCE Postdoctoral Fellow at CSIRO from 2008 to 2011 with Dr. Scott Watkins and Dr. Ezio Rizzardo. He then held a Fulbright Fellowship with Nobel Laureate Professor Alan Heeger at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 2011 to 2012. Returning to CSIRO, he advanced from Research Scientist to Senior Research Scientist and Group Leader of Agile Manufacturing by 2015. In 2015, he joined Monash University as Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Director of the Monash Energy Institute, roles he held until 2020 when he was promoted to Full Professor and Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Engineering. In December 2021, he assumed the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure).
Jasieniak’s research specializes in the development of nanomaterials for next-generation energy technologies, including solution-processed solar cells, semi-transparent electrodes, novel luminescent nanoparticles, microlasers, light-emitting devices, printable solar cells, batteries, X-ray detectors, and chemical sensors. His work contributes to structure-property relations of nanoscale materials for coatings and electronic devices, with applications in affordable clean energy and health technologies aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 7. Key publications include 'Co-doped perovskite nanocrystals for multiplexed anticounterfeiting applications' (Nanoscale, 2025), 'Design of the Low-Loading NiFe Hydroxide Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Catalyst Layers Based on Inverse Opal Supports' (ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2025), 'Enhanced piezoresponse in van der Waals 2D CuCrInP2S6 through nanoscale phase segregation' (Nanoscale Horizons, 2025), and 'Influence of humidity and aging on the optimization of VO2 sol-gel thin films for thermochromic smart windows' (Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology, 2025). His achievements include the Victorian Young Tall Poppy Award (2014), Julius Fellowship (CSIRO, 2013), ARC Fellowship (2011), and ASI Fellowship (2011). Jasieniak’s contributions have been featured in newspapers, radio, television, and online media, reaching millions on topics such as energy poverty, solar windows, and net-zero cities.
