Jae-Hyun Ryou is Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston, a position held since September 2025. He previously served as Associate Professor from September 2018 to August 2025 and Assistant Professor from September 2012 to August 2018 in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, with joint appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering Program, and affiliations with the Texas Center for Superconductivity and Advanced Manufacturing Institute. Prior to joining the University of Houston, Dr. Ryou held positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology, including Principal Research Engineer in 2012, Senior Research Engineer from July 2007 to June 2012, and Research Engineer II from August 2003 to June 2007. He also worked as Research Scientist III at Honeywell International from August 2001 to July 2003. Dr. Ryou earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001, focusing on III-phosphide self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. He holds an M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Yonsei University in 1995 and a B.S. in the same field from Yonsei University in 1993.
Dr. Ryou's research specializes in semiconductor materials and devices for electronic, photonic, sensing, and energy applications. His interests include flexible devices based on III-V semiconductors, III-Nitride semiconductors such as GaN, AlN, and InGaN for optoelectronics, piezoelectric sensors, and high-power devices; epitaxial growth via metalorganic chemical vapor deposition; ultrawide-bandgap materials for harsh-environment and high-temperature sensors; flexible photovoltaics; and self-powered wearable and implantable electronics. He has received numerous honors, including the Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity from the University of Houston in 2024, W. T. Kittinger Teaching Excellence Award from the Cullen College of Engineering in 2022, Senior Faculty Research Excellence Award in 2019, Teaching Excellence Award in 2017, Rising Innovator Award in 2020, multiple 50-in-5 Scholars recognitions, and Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowships in 2022, 2023, and 2025. Notable publications include "Real-time monitoring of hand tremor and palmar hyperhidrosis using self-powered touch-free image sensor fabricated with semiconductor nanowires" (Chemical Engineering Journal, 2026), "Flexible III-N thin-film piezoelectric sensor for smart lithium-ion battery management system" (ACS Applied Electronic Materials, 2025), "Skin-attached piezoelectric sensor arrays for continuous monitoring of oculomotor movements" (Advanced Healthcare Materials, 2024), "Piezoelectric sensor operating at very high temperatures and in extreme environments made of flexible ultrawide-bandgap single-crystalline AlN thin films" (Advanced Functional Materials, 2023), and "All-around diamond for cooling high-power devices" (Nature Electronics, 2022). His scholarship has amassed over 8,500 citations.
