Janardhan Rao (Jana) Doppa is the Huie-Rogers Endowed Chair Professor of Computer Science and George and Joan Berry Distinguished Professor in Engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University, where he has served as faculty since 2014. He currently chairs the EECS Graduate Studies Committee. Doppa earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Oregon State University in 2014 and his M.Tech. in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, in 2006. Earlier in his career, he taught courses at Oregon State University and IIT Kanpur, including research methods in computer science, data structures, and programming.
Doppa's research specializes in artificial intelligence and machine learning, focusing on AI-driven adaptive experimental design to accelerate discoveries in science and engineering, sequential decision-making under uncertainty, robust machine learning for high-stakes applications, use-inspired AI for agriculture, materials discovery, additive manufacturing, healthcare, cybersecurity, electronic design automation, and sustainable computing. He leads the AI Thrust on modeling systems of knowns and unknowns in the NSF-USDA AI Institute for Agriculture Decision Support. His contributions to structured machine learning have earned him election as an ACM Distinguished Member in 2025, WSU Faculty Mid-Career Award and Anjan Bose Outstanding Researcher Award in 2024, NSF CAREER Award in 2019, AAAI Senior Member in 2023, ACM Senior Member in 2022, Outstanding Junior Faculty in Research Award in 2020, and multiple Best Paper Awards including AAAI Conference (2013), ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (2021), ACM/IEEE Embedded Systems Week (2022, 2023), and ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Low Power Electronic Design (2023). Additional honors include Reid-Miller Teaching Excellence Award (2018), Google Faculty Research Award (2015), and Outstanding Paper Award at AAAI (2013). Doppa has delivered the Anjan Bose lecture on AI (2024) and mentors PhD students through data mining and research methods courses.
