Linda Martin is a Professor of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. She received her BS from the University of New Mexico in 1983, DVM from Colorado State University in 1990, and MS from Colorado State University in 1994. Board-certified as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC) since 1995, Martin established the Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service at the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital in 2013. In this role, she oversees the management of critically ill small animals, including complex cases involving pituitary surgery recovery, cannabinoid intoxication, and Cushing's disease treatments. Her clinical expertise supports multidisciplinary teams, such as the pioneering pituitary surgery service recognized for leading advancements in veterinary neurosurgery.
Martin's research interests focus on the role of critical illness on the pituitary-adrenal axis, fluid therapy, and electrolyte disorders. She has contributed to 27 publications indexed in PubMed, with key works including 'Retrospective evaluation of indications, transfusion protocols, and acute transfusion reactions associated with the administration of lyophilized canine albumin: 53 cases (2009-2020)' (Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, 2023), 'Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema in small animals' (Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, 2023), 'Severe Cannabinoid Intoxication in a Ferret (Mustela putorius furo) Treated With Intravenous Lipid Emulsion' (Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, 2025), 'Retrospective Evaluation of Cryoprecipitate Transfusion in Dogs to Prevent or Treat Hemorrhage: 21 Cases (2009-2023)' (Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, 2025), and 'Serum antibodies against human albumin in critically ill and healthy dogs' (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2008). Professionally, she serves on the Exam Committee of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and is a member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Martin delivers continuing education through WSU's online courses on topics such as bedside abdominal ultrasound, thoracic point-of-care ultrasound, approach to the sick diabetic, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in small animals.
