Dr Janneka Banks is a Lecturer in Nursing at the School of Health, University of the Sunshine Coast. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Nursing (Cancer and Haematology) from the University of Sydney. Banks has an extensive clinical background in acute and community oncology nursing. She commenced teaching at UniSC in 2014 and has contributed to various courses across all years of the undergraduate nursing program, with a particular focus on preparation for practice courses and research foundations.
Banks' research specializations include nurse-led survivorship care, quality of life of cancer patients in nurse-led clinics, and compassion fatigue among oncology nurses. She co-led the Nurse Led Survivorship Clinic project, funded by a $10,000 grant from the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association in 2018 with Trish Wilson. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and member of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia, she received the Emma Cohen Award for Best First-Time Presenter in 2025 from the Clinical Oncology Nurses Society of Australia for “Nothing left to give”: Australian oncology nurses experiences of compassion fatigue. Her key publications are 'Prevalence and predictors of compassion fatigue among Australian oncology nurses caring for adult cancer patients: A cross-sectional study' (2025), 'Compassion Fatigue Among Australian Oncology Nurses Caring for Adult Cancer Patients: Antecedents, Impact and Mediators' (2025), 'A Scoping Review of Compassion Fatigue Among Oncology Nurses Caring for Adult Patients' (2023), and 'Exploring the challenges in accessing care and support for cancer survivors in Australia during COVID-19' (2021). These works highlight her contributions to oncology nursing and nurse well-being.
