Dr. Jason James serves as an Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity in the School of Criminology and Security Studies at Indiana State University. He earned a Doctor of Science in Information Systems with a specialization in Cybersecurity from Robert Morris University in 2017, a Master’s in Technology with a concentration in Information Assurance and Security from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis in 2019, an MBA from Robert Morris University in 2005, and a BA in Economics from Allegheny College in 1998. James launched his professional career in cybersecurity in 2005 as an IT auditor with the United States Department of Defense Office of Inspector General in Washington, DC. He relocated to Indianapolis in 2007 and advanced to Senior IT Auditor with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service in 2010, amassing over 15 years of experience in IT auditing.
Prior to his full-time role at Indiana State University in 2020, James joined the School of Criminology and Security Studies faculty in 2019. His previous positions include Program Director of the cybersecurity program at Sullivan University, adjunct professor at Indiana Wesleyan University and Indiana State University’s Scott College of Business, and instructor at the American Public University System and the University of the Cumberlands. James has been instrumental in developing the university’s cyber lab, equipped with tools such as Magnet Forensics Axiom Cyber and Paraben E:3 Universal, to facilitate hands-on training aligned with certifications like CompTIA Security+. As director of the Vigo County High Tech Crimes Unit, he supervises students working real-world cases and contributed significantly to Indiana State University’s 2022 designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency. His research focuses on cybersecurity education and digital forensics vulnerabilities. Notable publications include “Starting a Cyber Security Program at a University: A Case Study” and “Cybersecurity Engineering: The Growing Need,” both published in Issues in Information Systems in 2020, as well as “Analysis of Security Features and Vulnerabilities in Public/Open Wi-Fi,” which earned a Meritorious Paper Award. He also authored “High tech cybercrime unit: A partnership between a local county and a university” in 2022.
