About Joan

Joan Brett is an Emeritus Professor in the Emeritus College and Associate Professor Emerita of Management and Entrepreneurship in the W. P. Carey School of Business within the Business & Economics faculty at Arizona State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from New York University in 1992 and a B.A./B.S. in Psychology and Social Studies Education from The Ohio State University in 1977. Currently, as Director of Faculty Development at Arizona State University since 2018, she coordinates university-wide faculty development on teaching initiatives, including the ASU Teaching Commons, ACUE teaching courses, and Faculty Grants for Teaching Excellence and Student Success, while assisting with faculty nominations for prestigious awards. Her extensive administrative career includes serving as Associate Dean of Graduate Programs at the W. P. Carey School of Business from 2015 to 2017, overseeing all MBA and ten master's programs and implementing strategies to enhance program reputation and revenue; Associate Vice Provost in the Graduate College from 2007 to 2012, managing academic program development, professional development programs, academic integrity initiatives, and strategic data management; Special Assignment in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost from 2009 to 2012, developing leadership initiatives; and Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Academic Programs at ASU West from 2004 to 2007, contributing to new degree programs, graduate enrollment growth, and accreditation efforts. Earlier academic appointments encompass Associate Professor at the W. P. Carey School of Business from 2008 onward and at the School of Global Management and Leadership at ASU West from 1999 to 2008, Assistant Professor at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University from 1992 to 1999, and various adjunct and visiting roles. Prior to academia, she held corporate positions such as Director of Executive and Management Training and Development at Bank One from 1979 to 1985 and Research Analyst at Nationwide Insurance from 1978 to 1979.

Brett's research specializations center on multisource feedback, leadership, goal orientation, and organizational behavior. Key publications include 'Utilizing Culture to Lead Innovation in Health Care Organizations' (Brett & Luciano, Harvard Business Review Online, 2018); 'Goal Orientation and Employee Resistance at Work: Implications for Manager Emotional Exhaustion with the Employee' (Brett et al., Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, 2016); 'Personality and Multisource Feedback Improvement: A Longitudinal Investigation' (Walker et al., Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management, 2010), recipient of the Outstanding Manuscript Published in Volume 11 award; '360-degree Feedback: Accuracy, reactions and perceptions of usefulness' (Brett & Atwater, Journal of Applied Psychology, 2001); and 'Goal orientation and goal content as predictors of performance in a training program' (Brett & VandeWalle, Journal of Applied Psychology, 1999). She received the 2010 Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management.
