Joy Evelyn Braithwaite is a technical staff member in the Translational Biodiscovery Laboratory at the Christchurch Heart Institute, part of the Department of Medicine, University of Otago Christchurch, within the Division of Health Sciences. The laboratory develops novel biomarker assays for the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases in clinical and pre-clinical settings. It performs in vitro and ex vivo pre-clinical testing of novel biomarkers for direct cardiac activity, detects human, rodent, and bovine forms of hormones, and uses HPLC to assess peptide metabolism kinetics and mechanisms in plasma and tissue. Technologies employed include RIA, ELISA, Luminex, Roche Cobas, and Brahms Kryptor, along with in vitro cell culture and ex vivo isolated heart facilities. The lab operates under FDA-level audits and ISO15189 regulations and conducts commercial studies for companies such as Roche, Abbott, Sphingotec, and ThermoFisher. Developed assays encompass atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), N-terminal BNP, c-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), neutral endopeptidase activity (NEP or E.C. 24.11), adrenomedullin, angiotensin II, angiotensin converting enzyme activity (ACE), plasma renin activity, arginine vasopressin, ACTH, cortisol, aldosterone, endothelin, cGMP, cAMP, catecholamines, ghrelin peptides, and signal peptide fragments derived from preproproteins. The institute is located at the Ground Floor, Parkside Building, Christchurch Hospital, 2 Riccarton Avenue, Christchurch 8011.
Joy Evelyn Braithwaite has provided key technical support to multiple research efforts. She delivered technical assistance with suPAR measurements in the study 'Influence of Protein Glycosylation on the Measurement of Soluble Urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor in Plasma,' published in 2025. She assayed erythroferrone (ERFE) in the Singapore cohort for the 2024 paper 'Circulating erythroferrone has diagnostic utility for acute decompensated heart failure in patients presenting with acute or worsening dyspnea.' She also conducted the urotensin II assays for the 2009 investigation 'Urotensin II Immunoreactivity in the Human Circulation.' She is listed among technical staff including Sara Raudsepp (Senior Technical Officer), Jacqui Lee, Mathew Byers, Jo Whitlow, Noeline Marsh, Liz Morrison, and Izzy Lynch. Her information appears in the University of Otago staff directory and Department of Medicine contacts for the Christchurch campus, with direct dial +64 3 372 6786.
