Katie Janz serves as Course Coordinator and Lecturer for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle campus. She possesses extensive clinical experience in emergency nursing, with over sixteen years across rural and remote areas, peripheral and tertiary hospitals, interstate and international settings, addressing patient presentations throughout the lifespan. Over the last six years, she has held senior registered nurse roles as Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Nurse Manager. Janz maintains a casual position in a local emergency department and maintains a strong commitment to emergency nursing, simulation practice, and trauma care. She delivers instruction in the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) and supports clinical skills and trauma-based education initiatives.
Previously, Janz served as Program Coordinator for the Health Professional Education Program within the School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame Australia. Her academic interests and research focus on simulation-based education. She is pursuing a PhD candidacy examining Virtual Reality (VR) simulation to develop non-technical skills in undergraduate nursing students. As a member of the Western Australia Simulation Healthcare Alliance (WASHA), she participates in simulation research and delivers presentations at conferences such as the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN) and Sigma events. Janz authored the peer-reviewed publication 'A Mixed Method Study of Communication, Teamwork and Leadership in the Emergency Department: Strategies for Safety' (2023, International Journal of Applied, Management and Scientific Studies), co-authored with Kylie Russell. The study employed a convergent mixed-methods design with 32 emergency department participants, assessing teamwork and communication via the Clinical Teamwork Scale and pre/post surveys. Findings indicated enhanced staff confidence, positive attitudes toward simulation, strong performance in role clarity and closed-loop communication, and broad support for regular multidisciplinary simulation training to bolster non-technical skills. Her ORCID ID is 0000-0002-6947-3688.
