Dr. Kerrilee Lockyer is a lecturer in Applied Linguistics in the School of Society and Culture within the College of Education, Behavioural and Social Sciences at Adelaide University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA Hons) and a PhD in Languages and Applied Linguistics from the University of South Australia, completing her doctorate in 2013. As a researcher, her work centers on the communicative practices of professionals in organisational settings, exploring how language shapes promotion, persuasion, and influence across diverse contexts. Her research specializations encompass languages and linguistics, marketing, strategic defence and security studies, technology crime and surveillance, language and culture in professional contexts, professional discourse, intercultural communication, and brand communication. Dr. Lockyer teaches foundational courses in applied linguistics, including LANG 1062 Language and Communication in Applied Linguistics, LANG 2021 Communication, Work and Organisations, LANG 3044 Language, Influence and Persuasion, and HUMS 1060 Truth, Lies and Being Human. She is eligible to supervise Masters and PhD students and currently oversees several higher degree by research candidates on topics such as literacy mediators' experiences, expertise in illustration practice, the future of work, brand co-creation through language, and hoax photographs as misinformation.
Dr. Lockyer's scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Notable publications are 'Large data and small stories: a triangulation approach to evaluating digital diplomacy' co-authored with Damien Spry in Place Branding and Public Diplomacy (2022), 'Language, meaning potential and bicritical interculturality in healthcare' with Fiona O'Neill and Jessica Crichton in The Routledge Handbook of Critical Interculturality in Communication and Education (2024), and '"We all sell wine, but it comes back to the land really": the narrative construction of place in Australian wine branding' in Research Companion to Language and Country Branding (2021). She also co-authored the report 'The role and importance of Islamic studies and faith in community Islamic schools in Australia: a case study of Adelaide (SA) and Darwin (NT)' (2016). Her commitment to high-quality teaching has been recognised through multiple awards and nominations, including Advance HE Fellow (FHEA) status. Dr. Lockyer serves as Copy Editor and Board Member for the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics since 2023, reviews manuscripts for leading international publishers and journals, and maintains active memberships in the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia since 2014 and the Australian Linguistic Society since 2024.
