Kristen N. Dickens is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education in the Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development at Georgia Southern University’s College of Education in Statesboro, Georgia. She holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of New Orleans (2014), an M.A. in Counseling with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy from East Tennessee State University (2009), and a B.A. in Psychology from Furman University (2007). A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Georgia, Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), and National Certified Counselor (NCC), Dr. Dickens joined Georgia Southern in 2015 as an Assistant Professor, promoted to Associate Professor in 2021. She previously served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at the University of New Orleans (2014-2015) and Adjunct Professor at Louisiana State University (2014). In her role, she maintains a 3-3 teaching load in master’s-level clinical mental health counseling courses, advises students, coordinates the counseling clinic, and aligns curricula with CACREP standards. She also advises the Gamma Sigma chapter of Chi Sigma Iota International Honor Society.
Dr. Dickens’ research specializations include ethics in counselor education, multiple roles and relationships, creativity in counseling pedagogy, couples and family therapy, and multicultural competencies. She has authored or co-authored 12 refereed journal articles and additional book chapters and presentations. Key publications include “Counselor education doctoral students’ experiences with multiple roles and relationships” (Journal of Counselor Education & Supervision, 2016), “Creativity in counselor education: More than case studies” (International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling, 2019), “Re-authoring to reconcile religious beliefs with sexual orientation: A narrative study” (Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 2019), and “Evidence-based leadership preparation program practices” (Georgia Educational Researcher, 2021). Her work has garnered approximately 194 citations. Awards include the 2022 Jack Miller Award for Teaching from Georgia Southern’s College of Education, first place in the 2011 American Counseling Association Graduate Student Ethics Essay Contest, and recognition for service to Chi Sigma Iota (2020). She serves on the editorial board of the Georgia Educational Researcher and contributes to professional committees.
