Louise Haselton is a South Australian visual artist and researcher affiliated with Adelaide University’s College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities, School of Communication, Media and Journalism. She completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Sculpture) at the University of South Australia in 1991 and a Master of Arts (by Research) at RMIT University, Melbourne, in 2002. Previously, she lectured in the Bachelor of Visual Art program at the South Australian School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia, from 2003 to 2020. Haselton’s sculptural practice centers on re-presenting overlooked and cast-off materials, resuscitating unloved objects by combining them in new ways to highlight their latent potential and restorative qualities. From her artist statement: “Re-presenting the overlooked is important in my work. I'm interested to see if the simple act of presenting something cast-off can be restorative. It's very satisfying to scrounge for unloved materials and objects and resuscitate them. That can be simply through giving them new company, by combining a rock with some packaging or some shells with chain; to point to another life or function that something could hold, the potential of things can lie latent and be animated through a simple act.”
Haselton’s career includes significant residencies and awards, such as the Helpmann Academy Residency at Sanskriti Kendra, Delhi, India (2005), ArtsSA Fellowship (2023), Australia Council grant for new work development (2018), and ArtsSA new work grants (2013, 2010). Her exhibition record features solo presentations including *Can we still be friends?* at GAGPROJECTS, Adelaide (2024), *like cures like* at Samstag Museum of Art, Adelaide (2019), *Outsides* at Australian Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide (2014), and *Errand Workshop* at Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, Adelaide (2011). Selected group exhibitions encompass *Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Magic Object* at Art Gallery of South Australia (2016), *do it (adelaide)* at Samstag Museum of Art (2015), and *North Terrace: Worlds in relief* at Samstag Museum of Art (2025). Key publications are Haselton, L. G. (2003), *Louise Haselton - of material importance*, Broadsheet: contemporary visual arts + culture, and the monograph *Louise Haselton: Act Natural* (Wakefield Press/SALA, 2019).
