Dr. Mariateresa (Teri) H. Muñoz is a Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Florida International University’s Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences. With over 35 years of experience working with individuals with communication deficiencies across the lifespan, she served as a speech-language pathologist and special education instructor at Miami-Dade County Public Schools from 1991 to 2000. From 2001 to 2015, she was President and Executive Director of the Pediatric Center for Communication & Feeding Deficiencies, Inc., functioning as an Early-Steps provider. Since 2005, she has held her clinical faculty position at FIU, where she managed a 15-year contract between FIU and Miami-Dade County Public Schools for speech-language services provided by graduate clinicians and supervisors. Muñoz holds an Associate degree in Speech Communication from Miami-Dade College, a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Florida International University, a Master’s degree and Clinical Doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology from Nova Southeastern University, and is currently completing a Doctor of Philosophy in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Special Education at Florida International University.
Muñoz’s areas of expertise include augmentative and alternative communication, early childhood development and intervention, culturally and linguistically responsive practices, special education, neuromotor speech disorders such as apraxia and dysarthria, aphasia, dementia, interprofessional practice, feeding disorders including Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, Communication Sciences and Disorders, early language development and disorders, phonetic principles in various languages, and autism spectrum disorders. She serves as Principal Investigator on the Health Resources and Services Administration Speech-Language Pathology grant awarded from 2020 to 2025 and as an investigator on the U.S. Department of Education’s ReServ-OPS: Related Services Training Program for OT, PT, and SLP grant from 2024 to 2027. Her scholarly contributions include publications such as “Touchscreen Technology to Improve Dementia Care Management for Older Adults Living in the Community” (2021), “Integration of health information technology and promotion of personhood in family-centered dementia care” (2021), and “Person-centered memory and communication interventions for dementia: A case study approach” (2022). She has co-authored book chapters with former presidents of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and presented clinical practices and research findings at regional, state, national, and international conferences, two of which earned awards. Muñoz founded St. Thérèse’s Roses of Hope, a non-profit organization providing evaluative and therapeutic services for speech-language and feeding disorders, and established the Clinical Apprenticeship Program offering mentorship in clinical practice, research, manuscript submissions, and conference presentations.
