Dr. Mark Avery serves as a Senior Lecturer in Health Services Management within the Department of Management, Griffith Business School at Griffith University, where he has been a faculty member for 15 years. His academic qualifications include a PhD from Griffith University, a Master of Business by Research (MBus(Res)) from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), a Bachelor of Health Administration (BHA) from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and professional designations such as Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD), Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Management (FCHSM), Certified Health Executive (CHE), and Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders (FIML). Avery is the Editor-in-Chief of the Asia Pacific Journal of Health Management, playing a pivotal role in advancing scholarship in health leadership and management. His research specializations focus on health services governance, leadership, and management, with contributions to areas such as clinical leadership, health innovation, accreditation, and quality improvement in healthcare delivery.
In his career, Avery has held positions including Program Director for Health Services Management at Griffith University and convenor of courses like Health Economics for Promoting Value-based Care. He teaches, conducts research, and consults in health leadership and management. Avery has authored or co-authored over 27 publications, accumulating more than 130 citations. Notable publications include "Evaluation of Leadership Competencies Among Public Health Professionals in Nigeria" (2025), "Factors Influencing the Establishment of Hospital Accreditation Programs" (2025), "Leveraging Experience-Based Co-Design to Support an Innovative Health Workforce: A Graduate Certificate in Health Services Innovation Case Study" (2026), "Nurses' Experiences in Voluntary Error Reporting" (2021), "Health Boards' Governance of Quality and Risk: Quality Improvement Agenda for the Board" (2021), "Protocol for Leading Health Services Innovation: A Hybrid Type 2 Implementation-Effectiveness Study" (2024), and "Suicide, Recession, and Unemployment" (The Lancet, 2013). He has participated in funded research projects, including those supported by the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations. Avery received the 2021 Gold Medal Award from the Australasian College of Health Service Management for his outstanding contributions. Additionally, he has served in leadership roles such as Queensland Branch President of ACHSM.
