About Mark

Dr Mark Overton is a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of Technology Sydney. He holds a PhD from the University of Otago awarded in 2023, along with a Master of Physiotherapy (2017), Postgraduate Diploma in Physiotherapy (2016), Postgraduate Certificate in Physiotherapy (2015), and Bachelor of Physiotherapy (2013), all from the University of Otago. Prior to his current role, which he began in 2025, Overton served as a Lecturer at the University of Otago from 2021 to 2025 and worked as a Senior Physiotherapist at Southern Rehab from 2017 to 2025, with earlier clinical experience there from 2014. He has over ten years of clinical experience in interdisciplinary pain management, musculoskeletal care, and rehabilitation.

Overton’s research focuses on pain, knee osteoarthritis, low back pain, quantitative sensory testing, and smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment. He led the Understanding Knee Osteoarthritis Pain Experiences (U-KOPE) study, which examined psychosocial and lifestyle factors related to knee osteoarthritis pain through intensive daily diary methods and quantitative sensory testing to assess pain sensitivity and predictors of outcomes. His work has appeared in journals including Pain Reports, Osteoarthritis & Cartilage Open, The Clinical Journal of Pain, Frontiers in Pain Research, Musculoskeletal Science and Practice, and the New Zealand Journal of Physiotherapy. He contributes to teaching and supervision in the Master of Physiotherapy programme at UTS, including as subject coordinator.
